Top questions to ask in an interview

Posted 26 February 2020

Confidence is key. No matter how many times you’ve sat in that chair facing your potential employers, interviews can be tough.

Taking the time to prepare, not only about the company but also yourself, will make you feel a lot more confident.

The Interview

The interview is your time to shine and stand out from the others. One way to stand out from the crowd is by asking questions. This shows your interest in the position and highlights what you know about the company and the position.

Regardless if you are more of an extrovert or introvert, there are a variety of questions you can ask in your next interview.

Before taking note of these, make sure you are comfortable asking the questions. Remain calm and confident and only choose questions that make sense to you.

Remaining confident throughout the entire interview is essential for a successful interview. They will remember your self-assurance when discussing who they want to hire.

The type of questions you can ask include;

  • How would you describe the general culture of the company and the workplace?
  • Why did you choose to work for this company?
  • Do you offer continuing education and professional training?
  • What are some of the biggest challenges/successes facing the department currently?
  • What can you tell me about your new products or plans for growth?
  • What process will be used to evaluate my employee performance?
  • How do you define success for this job?
  • Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with?
  • Do you see any reason I might not be a good fit for this position?
  • What is the usual time frame for making the hiring decision?
  • What is the next step in the process?
  • May I contact you if any further questions arise?

The interview process is your best introduction to the company. You can develop a connection with the interviewee by reciprocating their dialogue. The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable they are.  This is your opportunity to gather information about the position and the company that you could not get online. Take advantage of this opportunity and make sure it is the right position for you.

As tempting as benefits and salary information is to know up front, we recommend you discuss this once you have received an offer for the position. Not jumping ahead is important so you remain focused on having a great and memorable first interview.
